Phoenix Real Estate Scottsdale - A History Lesson

When looking into Phoenix real estate Scottsdale living, it may interest you to know a bit about the Phoenix real estate Scottsdale communities.  Though they are now mainly considered to be two parts of the Phoenix, Arizona greater metropolitan area, the Phoenix real estate Scottsdale area has two separate histories.

Scottsdale, Arizona was originally irrigated and farmed by the Hohokam Indians who established themselves the area circa 300 B.C.  The Hohokam and Anasazi Native Americans together built amazing canals which turned the Phoenix real estate Scottsdale area into a desert oasis. 

While the Hohokam Indians disappeared somewhat mysteriously around 1450 A.D., it is thought that they may be the ancestors of the modern day Pima and Tohono O’odham Native Americans who now live in the Salt River and Gila River Native American Reservations.  The Scottsdale, Arizona part of the Phoenix real estate Scottsdale region has thrived because of these canals and is now considered one of the best luxury places to live.    

Jack Swilling originally founded the city that would eventually become Phoenix, Arizona and the third (3rd) largest state capital, according to 2005 estimations. Originally from Wickenburg, Jack Swilling saw promise in the rich dirt of the Phoenix, Arizona region of the Phoenix real estate Scottsdale area in 1867. 

By 1868 several families from Wickenburg relocated to what was then called “Swilling’s Mill.”  The name “Phoenix” was given to the actual city once city construction and government began.   

The pioneers who established Phoenix worked quickly to set up the new city. On May 4 of 1868 an election precinct was established for the city of Phoenix, Arizona, and a short month later Jack

Swilling was named postmaster of the new United States Post Office established in Phoenix.  In February of 1871, Maricopa County was established with Phoenix, Arizona as the county seat.  Phoenix became an incorporated city in May of 1881 and elected Judge John T. Alsap as the city’s first elected mayor.

By 1888, Phoenix had become a railway hub and the economy was picking up pace. Recognizing the need for organization and control of the economy, Phoenix developed its own Chamber of Commerce in fall of 1888.  In 1940, World War II (two, 2) put a permanent mark on Phoenix’s economic landscape, and Phoenix’s economy shifted from agricultural to industrial. 

As a railway hub, Phoenix became a gateway for goods, and entrepreneurs flooded into Phoenix to be close to distribution services.  Scottsdale, Arizona, of the Phoenix real estate Scottsdale area has benefit from Phoenix’s transport hub status, and been able to become a luxury resort town on the heels of Phoenix’s economy.
